The Law Office Of Jeffrey A. Klein - Focusing On Family Law Issues
It can be fairly simple and straightforward to calculate child support. Most states do it the same way. In Florida, your income, your expenses, and the income and expenses of your child's other parent are inserted into an equation, along with information about the custody arrangement.
That equation produces a number, and that number represents how much the non-custodial parent - usually the father - will pay in child support.

I am Jeffrey A. Klein, and I handle family law issues such as child support. Unlike many local attorneys, I am not a general practitioner. My focus on this area of law has given me a comprehensive grasp of Florida's family law statutes. In addition, my accounting background helps me handle the complex financial issues that may arise.
Do You Have An "Informal" Child Support Arrangement?
Better Get A Court Order - Or It Might Not Count
Sometimes, a couple will set up a child support arrangement outside of the court system. They decide together on an appropriate amount, and the father makes voluntary payments to the mother.
Without a court order, though, the payor parent may never get proper credit for support payments actually made. The custodial parent can request a child support hearing, and at that hearing the custodial parent can claim that the payor never made payments. It happens more often than you might expect.
Without proof that you have been paying, the court will order you to pay back payments (aka "arrears") in child support - even though you have already made the payments!

Do Not Go To A Child Support Hearing Without An Attorney!
This goes for either parent. If the other side is represented by an attorney and you are not, you are setting yourself up for disaster. You will either end up paying more than you can afford or receiving less than your child needs. You also need to keep in mind that once the initial child support amount is set, your monthly payment will be difficult to modify - even if you lose your job or become disabled!
